1. Avoiding the mess.

Whenever refilling your ink cartridge you should do it over some newspaper but it is better if you can use an old rag or shirt instead. The reason being the cloth will soak up any excess ink immediately and it will be much easier to clean up afterwards. But once you have practiced refilling your ink cartridges a few times the mess issue will soon be a thing of the past.

2. Cleaning up the mess the first time.

You will find that when refilling an ink cartridge for the first time you are likely to get ink on your hands. In order to get it off you need to wash them with soap in order to remove any excess oil. Then follow this up with a solution of mild bleach and water. Then after this you wash your hands again with soap and water so that you remove the bleach and excess.

3. What to do if the cartridges dry out.

The number one problem when refilling cartridges is that you wait too long before refilling them. If you do not fill up your cartridge straight away it will dry and clog the micro holes at the printer head. This will then lead to all sorts of problems. The foremost of these being that they ink does not come out. So a good way of preventing this is to have two cartridges one in the printer and one that is filled and ready to use. But if you do not have two cartridges then make sure that you refill the cartridge as soon as it runs out (do not wait).

However if you wish to avoid these types of problems then make sure that you follow the instructions which come with your Lexmark ink refill. Most importantly of all you should follow the instructions provided to the letter.
